Christmas party!

On Monday, Year 1 and 2 had our Christmas Party! We bought our party clothes to get changed into and a great time in the hall!

We danced to lots of Christmas songs...

We played pass the parcel...

We had a dancing competition...

And we even had a very special visitor...

We had a fantastic time!!

2D shapes

We have been learning about 2D shape this week and recapping the 2D shapes that we learnt about in Reception.
We made 2D shape pictures using circles, squares, triangles and rectangles.

Miss Smith challenged us to be able to describe each shape by explaining about the number of sides it has, the number of corners and the types of sides (curved or straight).

Artist study

This week we have been studying a famous artist called Mark Rothko. He was a Russian painter who lived most of his life in America. He was born in 1903 and died in 1970.

We started by looking at some of his painting on the website http://www.markrothko.org and talking the colours, shapes and moods of the pictures.

We then used pencil crayons to investigate which colours we thought looked good together.

We then used paint to create a painting in the style of Mark Rothko by painting different sized blocks of colour onto our paper.

Here are some pictures of us creating our masterpieces. They will be on display in the classroom shortly.

Gymnastics!

All through the autumn term we have been working with Ashleigh, a gymnastics coach.
Here are some pictures from one of our final sessions where we were working on partner balances.

A visit from PC Karl!

We had a special visit from PC Karl this week! He came to talk to us about 'Stranger Danger'. PC Karl taught us that someone we don't know is a stranger and that they don't always look like they do in films or stories.

We learnt that if a stranger ever asks us for our name or offers us sweets or other nice things then we should do three things:
1. Say NO!
2. Walk (or run if it is safe!) away
3. Tell an adult that you know what has happened straight away!

We also talked about how important it is at this busy time of year to stay close to our families and adults if we are out and about. We talked about getting lost in shops and busy places and if this did ever happen then you should stay inside the shop and tell an adult who works there that you are lost; they will be able to help you find your family.

Year 1 had some very sensible answers to PC Karl's questions and knew lots about keeping safe!

Stars of the Week - 21st November 2014

The Year 1 Stars of the week this week are Maisie and Henry!

Henry has been doing excellent measuring in numeracy and has been using cubes and other objects to measure the length of items in our classroom.
Maisie has been writing some excellent sentences to give information about the Bog Baby!

Well done Maisie and Henry and the rest of the children in Year 1 who have worked very hard this week!

The Bog Baby!

We have been reading 'The Bog Baby' and have drawn story maps to help us retell the story.
Can you use the picture of our story map below to retell the story to your families?

Here are pictures of us creating our own story maps with a partner:

Stars of the Week - 7th November 2014

As always it was a very difficult decision to just choose two stars in Year 1!
We chose Maisie for her excellent work in phonics this week; she has been learning how the same sounds can be made in different ways.

Miss Smith also chose Lewis this week for his excellent work in Guided Reading. Lewis was very excited to read the 'Bear Hunt' and worked hard to apply what he has been learning in his phonics to his reading.

Well done Lewis and Maisie!

The Bog Baby

Today we listened to part of a story called 'The Bog Baby' written by Jeanne Willis and Gwen Millward.
In the story two sisters go fishing in a magic pond in Bluewood Wood and catch something that they didn't expect to; a Bog Baby.

We listened to a description of the Bog Baby and we tried to picture it in our minds as we couldn't see the pictures. We worked with a partner to make a model of the Bog Baby using the picture that we had in our minds.

This is the description that we had:

These are our models:

When we had finished our models we finally got to see a picture of the Bog Baby!

Do you think our models look like the real thing?

Fireworks!

We have had a fireworks theme this week to celebrate Bonfire night!
We experimented with different objects to print in paint to make firework pictures; we tried forks, cotton buds, scrubbing brushes, potato mashers and fly swats.

We also followed instructions to make a paper rocket and then we wrote our own instructions using time words and bossy words!
